about:
Beyond its provocative name, which recalls the influence of marketing on our brain by distracting us from more important issues, the project wishes to question our listening habits. Since 2012, Sylvain Darrifourcq, Xavier Camarasa and Valentin Ceccaldi have embarked on a sound research which took shape in the MILESDAVISQUINTET! A trio whose mechanical, repetitive and immersive sound universe has as its main object the search for rhythmic desynchronization.
In 2024, this research was extended to a more substantial body; composed of musicians, improvisers whose work fits perfectly with the concerns of the trio. The main challenge is to shape the improvising qualities of each of its musicians by exploiting their work in the diversion of the instrument to enrich the timbral spectrum of the musical mechanics of the MDQ.
But MDQO is also a fantastic pretext for scientific observation.
The D SYNCH project is a research project led by Clément Canonne, CNRS researcher in cognitive psychology and within the “Analysis of Musical Practices” team at IRCAM; and Thomas Wolff, Austrian researcher, attached to the Central European University in Vienna. As Clément points out, we are generally subject to a so-called “training” effect in our social behaviors, which makes us tend towards synchronization of our movements and our attitudes. Through improvisation as practiced by the MDQO, Clément and Thomas studied the strategies that MDQO musicians use to desynchronize their speeds while adjusting their musical gestures towards a common objective: achieving a coherent overall sound.
In parallel with this research, an experimental documentary (D_PHASE) was produced by Romain Al who followed the team throughout the research process.
