about:

The 1961/62 trio Jimmy Giuffre 3 with Paul Bley and Steve Swallow was extremely short-lived, but in the long run it influenced a multitude of musicians with its abstract and quiet intensity. Three studio albums, Fusion, Thesis and Free Fall, a few later radio recordings from the same period, a free conception of tonality and form, a vacillation between the „simple“ and the „complex“, music inviting silence.
How can you approach such style-defining music more than 60 years after it was created without copying it, especially with a group like Der lange Schatten playing in the same line-up?

A thought experiment:
What could have happened if records from the Giuffre 3 had found themselves on the two turntables of Robert Earl Davis Jr, better known as DJ Screw, and had been fragmented, slowed down, layered and reassembled into new forms with his technique called chopped and screwed? Based on this thought experiment, the idea arose to extract slowed down musical fragments from the improvisations of the Giuffre 3 and to use them as compositional material for, a double trio. In the spirit of the dreamlike feel, deceleration and long, time-defying flow of Screw’s mixtapes, while maintaining an aesthetic in which compositional and improvisational approaches mingle and coexist.
The trio Der lange Schatten, founded in 2010 by Michael Thieke, Håvard Wiik and Antonio Borghini, is expanded for the project by Félicie Bazelaire, Antonis Anissegos and Tobias Delius into Der doppelte Schatten.

The band premiered the music in June 2023 at km28 in Berlin.
